Book Binding + Drawing in the Wild with Heather O'Hara of Burdock & Bramble
Join me for a morning or afternoon of outdoor book making and drawing in the wilds of Baltimore. We will make a simple, no-glue sketchbook, then take to the field to draw in one of my favorite Baltimore locations. I will take you through each step of making your book and then lead the group in a short observational drawing exercise to get started with sketching. After the first hour of binding and drawing together, each person can choose a spot for another hour of drawing, and I will circulate to offer help and answer any questions. We'll make our sketchbooks from a medium weight drawing paper suitable for graphite, pen and ink, other dry drawing materials, and an occasional watercolor wash. I will have pencils, pens, and some surprise materials available for use during the session, so no need to bring any supplies, unless you have favorites that you prefer to use. Please do bring a seat of some kind (folding chair, blanket, camp chair), and dress to be comfortable while working outside for 2+ hours. In the event that wet weather threatens to interfere with our binding and drawing, we will meet at an alternate, but equally interesting public indoor location in Baltimore. I will let you know the night before we meet if there is a change of venue due to weather.
Hi, I'm Heather, and I run Burdock & Bramble, a printing and hand-bookbinding business in Baltimore. I split my time between making hand-carved, letterpress-printed block prints and teaching public and private book arts classes in and around Baltimore city. I love making books, and even more, I love sharing how to make books. This is my simple approach to binding: everyone can learn to do it, and you can get great results with practice and a basic set of reasonably-priced hand tools. I've been binding for over ten years with students of all ages and from all places, and I'm looking forward to binding with you!
