About Your Host

The August Axel Jewelry Studio is a creative workshop in Venice Beach, CA. The Studio and course offerings were designed to serve a range of skills and interests from talented tinkerers to advanced artists. Our goal is to provide solid and safe bench-instruction, combined with hands-on practice, so artists may operate safely, independently and successfully. COURSES: Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Soldering. Bezel Setting. Tube Setting. Flush Setting. Prong Setting. Metalsmithing. Cold-Connections. Wire Wrapping. Knotting. Private or Group Lessons. And more. INSTRUCTORS: As Owner and Senior Instructor, Christy Sears brings a wealth of knowledge to the bench. With 15+ years of jewelry soldering and metal fabrication, endless patience and a healthy sense of humor, she creates a warm and welcoming learning environment. Not only does she believe in teaching "how", but "why" and this has made all of the difference to her students. All of the August Axel Jewelry Studio instructors create the same atmosphere, so students may reach their goals.

What we'll do

This is an ages-old technique that reaches deep into modern design aesthetics! To begin, Diana (of Daughter of The Raj!) will take you through the basics of wax carving including technical instructions and the qualities and properties of the tools and materials. Then students will have hands-on practice with subtractive and additive methods while receiving personal attention from the Instructor. And since this class is for beginners, we’ll also teach methods for recovering from mistakes or cracks. At the end of the class, you’ll have a wax-carved ring, as a master, ready to be cast! Your Instructors will deliver the pieces to a local Casting Artist and retrieve them in time for the next class meeting, two weeks later. In the second session, each piece will be revealed and discussed. Then, pieces will be finished professionally by each student, according to their own taste. As always, we aim to deliver a value-packed experience that teaches the “how” and “why” of jewelry techniques, so students may learn to work creatively, safely and independently. Materials Fee: $30 collected on-site via cash, credit card or debit card Second Meeting: Two weeks after the first. Exact time to be discussed & decided in the first class. Safety Requirements :: No Exceptions · Protective eyewear will be provided and must be worn · Long hair must be pulled into a hair clip or ponytail · Wear play clothes that can get dirty. No loose or flowy clothing/sleeves · Closed-toed shoes
