Pressing Matters: A One-Day Beginner’s Letterpress Workshop
From Gutenberg to polymer, this is our one-day intro course! This workshop will introduce you to the history and the hands-on fundamentals of letterpress printing from traditional typesetting in lead to printing with polymer plates. In the first portion of the course, you will learn the basics of how to select typefaces, set type, mix inks, and pull prints from a Vandercook proofing press. Participants will set and print two projects in lead: initials on a notecard, and a multi-line greeting card. Once the typesetting projects are complete, you will learn the basics of ordering plates, preparing plates, and pulling prints from a Vandercook proofing press. We will provide a selection of seasonal polymer greeting card plates designed by one of our printmakers. Participants will leave the workshop with several cards at the end of the day. Class fee includes polymer plate and all supplies. Bring your own laptop for polymer plate design/setup consultation. Participants are eligible to attend open press nights following successful completion of course. There will be short breaks throughout the session for lunch and moments of respite. Packing a bagged lunch is encouraged. Light snacks, fizzy beverages & coffee will be provided.
Arbalest Press was founded in 2015 by a group of artists and printers based in the Boston area. After years of printing together at the Bow & Arrow Press in Cambridge, MA, we decided to open a first-of-its-kind printing arts collaborative in Boston, dedicated to teaching letterpress printing and book arts while also producing an array of letterpress works of our own, from wedding cards to stationery and fine press prints. Just as we honor letterpress in a digital age, the name Arbalest—which refers to the technology that succeeded the Bow & Arrow—pays homage to our collective roots. Our Facilities: Arbalest Press occupies a second-floor space at the Stove Factory in the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston. With our own dedicated parking lot and easy accessibility from all points, we offer year-round workshops of all kinds. Our studio includes an array of type and presses, including two Vandercook Proofing Presses.
