Seven-week Intro to Fire Dance Series Featuring Staff
Join us over the course of seven weeks as we progress through a step-by-step process of developing beginner staff skills as well as a technical and practical approach to fire safety. We will also discuss our relationship to fire, how the fire element plays into our inner lives and you will learn to express yourself with fire using fire staff spinning. The final day of this seven week course will take place at an outdoors, off-site location and offer an opportunity for everyone to get a chance to spin fire in a safe environment. Instructor Avi Chertok is a member of Pyrotechniq, a Chicago-based fire troupe with over 30 years of combined performance and teaching experience between its members. The Pyros have worked with a variety of student populations. Avi has taught group and private lessons in Chicago and has recently returned from his 2015 season of teaching with Performers Without Borders in India. He is also an FAI certified fire safety instructor and a certified Firewalking Ceremony Facilitator. Pyrotechniq regularly performs nationally, regionally at the Sukhava Bodhe Festival and locally as sponsors of the Chicago Full Moon Jam held at Foster Street Beach each month. Series tuition is $150, which includes all props and materials. Preregistration and prepayment is required to reserve your space. 7-Week Series: Starts Thursday, July 28th @ 7:45 - 9pm The Staff Series runs Thursdays July 28, August 4, 11, 18, and 25 and Sept 1 and 8, @ 7:45 - 9pm each day. Pyrotechniq provides a well-rounded, fully-immersed instructional experience for every student in the tools we offer. We cover all the various aspects that exist in the art of object manipulation ranging from the technical, to the beautiful, and from the physical to the ethereal. Dance and body awareness is equally as important in fire dance as proper technique. There is also a recognizable difference in the necessary elements of spinning for personal growth and enjoyment, and spinning for an audience. All of these factors will be taken into consideration with every student enrolled. We take into serious account the dangers involved in dealing with the element of fire and the legalities of fire play in various environments. Upon request, we can also build a customized workshop for larger groups fitted to the desired tool, schedules, purpose and interest of the students. Lessons invariably include elements of body movement, technical knowledge, and fire safety.
