"This arched shawl begins at the center with only a few stitches while yarn over increases quickly expand the shape. Garter stitch short row wedges add length to one side forming rays that gradually increase in size. The repetitive knit stitches and rhythmic short rows are easy to work while still keeping your interest, a perfect travel project! Built in I-cord edges and an I-cord bind off outline the entire shape for a clean finish. Choose one yarn or use different stash and scrap yarns for a striped effect." -Stephen West's Dotted Rays. We've had a watermelon-colored shop sample of this wonderful shawl on display since summer, and we're excited to host a class to help people learn the i-cord cast on, yarn-overs, and simple short rows! Prerequisites: Students must be comfortable with knitting and purling, reading patterns, and working with fingering weight yarn. Supplies Needed: - A pair of 40" US size 6 circular needles. - Students will need to purchase a copy of the Dotted Rays pattern (available on Ravelry, or come in/call the shop to purchase a digital copy for 10% off). There are two sizes to choose from: - The small size measures 60" long and 13" at the deepest part, and requires 720 yards of fingering weight yarn. - The large size measures 92" long and 22" at the deepest part, and requires 1200 yards of fingering weight yarn. - The small size can also be worked in worsted weight yarn, and will measure 82" long and 21" at the deepest part. It requires 900 yards of worsted weight yarn and a 40" US size 8 circular needle. - A note on yarn choices: the standard gradient yarn cakes we carry are slightly smaller than what is called for the small size shawl but will work just fine with some simple planning, so feel free to make a watermelon or other gradient! We also carry the watermelon in a larger size cake suitable for the large shawl. And if you want to make the striped version we carry mini skeins, plus it's a great stash-buster for leftover sock yarns. The final two wedges for a large size take about 230 yards each, so keep this in mind when picking stash yarns. If you need to purchase any supplies, arrive early to The Black Squirrel and get a 10% discount! *Cancellation Policy* You must cancel your class reservation at least 72 hours in advance in order to receive a full refund. Classes cancelled after the 72 hour limit has passed will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, either by partial refund or by rescheduling.
