Doodling for Artistic Meditation with Artist and Graphic Designer Orna
Take a break from your daily race and treat yourself! In this workshop you will learn how to relax by doodling with a black pen on white paper. The basic principles are as old as the history of art and do not require previous experience. Doodling is based on human behavior, in which one refrains from planning and allows lines and shapes to emerge and lead you. The process might look intricate, but it is actually a simple pathway to self soothing, inner focus, calming an anxious mind, and increasing self confidence by owning your mistakes. We will explore patterns and designs of numerous cultures (Mayan, Maori, Celtic, American Indians etc) throughout time and create structured designs through drawing (or doodling) various patterns. You will be able to use the method to calmly end your day, pass time during flights or simply whenever you need to take a break to enjoy the creative process without rushing anywhere Bring with you: • A pencil and an eraser (to mark our guidelines and shape design areas) • A a black pen (Micron® pens are recommended, but you can also use the any extra fine Sharpie® pen) • Heavy white drawing paper or card-stock (Watercolor pad is great).
I always remember myself sketching and drawing. As a child, all my notebooks were decorated and framed with designs in black and white or color. Every empty envelope or a scrap of paper was immediately filled with sketches, and a visit to the art store was (and still is) better than one to the candy store. I hold a bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Biology, and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology followed by post-doctorate research in UC Berkeley and Stanford University, where I conducted Bioinformatics research. After years of research investigating human hormones, I decided to turn my passion and long time dream into a profession and studied Graphic Design. I took classes with Dmitry Grudsky to improve my drawing skills, and now, I am a freelance graphic designer and artist, and a member of Jan’s Art Studio. As an artist and a biologist I am fascinated with nature. I love to observe its soothing beauty and am in awe of its limitless and majestic powers. I am always excited to experiment with different materials to create interesting collages using mixed media that will be pleasing to the eye and intriguing to the mind.
