Think of this as a wine tasting – except with fine chocolate instead of cabernet. The fun night out is a multi-sensory journey into the world of artisan chocolate.
Ruth Kennison, chocolatier and chocolate educator, leads these fascinating tastings for groups of friends, colleagues or families. The hands-on sessions give you the opportunity to savor at least five artisinal chocolates from around the globe, including handcrafted bonbons made by host chocolatier, Ruth.
As well as tasting the finished chocolate, you will have an opportunity to try a freshly roasted cocoa bean and be entertained with stories about the history of chocolate and the “bean to bar” process. Guaranteed not to be boring!

Ruth Kennison is a chocolatier and chocolate educator who travels the world in search of the perfect bonbon. She runs The Chocolate Project, which offers tastings and wisdom about where our chocolate comes from, and has a line of custom confections called Bonaparte Chocolate. Ruth is a popular teacher at Gourmandise Cooking of Sweets & Savories in Santa Monica and she visits schools with schools and groups to share the sweetness of her creations.
A native of Boston and graduate of Northwestern University, Ruth studied at The French Pastry School, the Callebaut Chocolate Academy, as well under Chef Stephane Treand (M.O.F.). Her infatuation with chocolate began with her first job in high school at a prominent sweets shop in Boston’s Faneuil Hall. Since then, she has followed her dessert passions around the globe – taste-tasting vanilla beans in Tahiti, selling homemade madeleines in Sydney, honing her chocolate skills in Asia alongside a former pastry chef from Spain’s El Bulli Restaurant and meeting the chocolate greats in Paris.
Ruth and her travel writer husband, David, are slowly making their way around the earth’s “chocolate belt,” an area 10 to 20 degrees from the equator, where conditions are ripe for growing cacao.
Known for her outgoing, lively events and classes, Ruth is well known in the craft chocolate scene and stays in in touch with the best purveyors and chocolate makers in the U.S., Europe and beyond. She is at her happiest when she’s with a group, hands covered in chocolate.
Ruth and David live in Los Angeles near the beach with son Sebastian, who serves as Taste Tester #1.
