About Your Host

The August Axel Jewelry Studio is a creative workshop in Venice Beach, CA. The Studio and course offerings were designed to serve a range of skills and interests from talented tinkerers to advanced artists. Our goal is to provide solid and safe bench-instruction, combined with hands-on practice, so artists may operate safely, independently and successfully. COURSES: Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Soldering. Bezel Setting. Tube Setting. Flush Setting. Prong Setting. Metalsmithing. Cold-Connections. Wire Wrapping. Knotting. Private or Group Lessons. And more. INSTRUCTORS: As Owner and Senior Instructor, Christy Sears brings a wealth of knowledge to the bench. With 15+ years of jewelry soldering and metal fabrication, endless patience and a healthy sense of humor, she creates a warm and welcoming learning environment. Not only does she believe in teaching "how", but "why" and this has made all of the difference to her students. All of the August Axel Jewelry Studio instructors create the same atmosphere, so students may reach their goals.

What we'll do

Learn to use Precious Metal Clay (PMC) to make beautiful jewelry pieces. PMC is recycled metal made of tiny pieces of fine silver, gold, bronze, or copper, that are combinged with a wet binder, to make a clay-like substance. This “clay" can be manipulated in many ways to form beautiful jewelry or sculptures. After firing, by torch or kiln, the binder burns away and students have a pure piece of metal. Students will learn the properties of PMC, how to properly handle and store the clay, how to roll-out, shape, cut and texturize the clay using metal stamps or found objects, basic stone setting and how to construct flat and dimensional pieces. This is not your typical PMC class! The knowledge and know-how that Melissa will impart, run deep! (PMC also uses cheaper and more re-usable materials than traditional metalsmithing. Phew!!) Each student will make a fine-silver pendant and bail. While these items will be kiln-fired, the Instructor will also demonstrate torch-firing PMC for added-value. Expect to meet like-minded artists, learn a wealth of knowledge about PMC ins-and-outs from a very experienced Instructor and have a few laughs. THIS CLASS MEETS TWICE!. Items will be made in the first session (4-hours) then kiln-fired and returned for the second session (1.5 hours) for finishing. With the Instructor, the class will collectively decide the best date and time for the 2nd meeting, which is usually 1-week later. SAFETY REQUIREMENTS: • Closed-toed, low-heeled or no-heeled shoes • Comfortable “play-clothes”. No flowing sleeves or bulky fabrics • Long hair must be worn in a bun or ponytail • Protective eyewear will be provided and must be worn TOOLS & MATERIALS: A $40 materials fee (maximum) will be collected in the Studio and includes 15 grams of silver PMC3. Cash, debit or credit cards accepted. LOCATION: The Studio address will be provided to Students who enroll in the class
