Backpacking Castle Rock State Park
Learn backpacking skills in the Bay Area's backyard. Castle Rocks's proximity to the Bay Area and it's extensive trail system make this trip our most popular backpacking skills class. Join us as we travel through the Santa Cruz mountains, gaining beautiful views of the Monterey Bay, passing by redwoods and Castle Rock's unique sandstone features. We make our camp where we relax, share adventure stories and enjoy a backcountry meal. This trip is designed for beginning backpackers in good physical condition, who are interested in learning the skills and gear required to be safe and comfortable in the back country. You will learn foundations of: - Leave No Trace Principals - Gear required for multi-day back country travel - How to use tents and stoves - Backpack packing strategy - Local wild edibles and other flora and fauna What to expect Trip leaves on Saturday morning and returns on Sunday at around 1:30pm The trail is 3 miles to the campground and moderate to strenuous The backpack will weigh 30-40 pounds (depending on what participants bring) We provide 4-person tents Backpacks Sleeping bags Sleeping pads Sleeping bag liner Dinner and breakfast You bring Headlamp Appropriate clothing lunch food Good hiking shoes/boots Learn backpacking skills in Bay Area's backyard.
