Edible wild plants are growing right at your feet, in our city parks, as “weeds” in gardens and yards, even in abandoned parking lots. You just need to know where to look and how to safely identify and sustainably harvest them. Leda will show you how to spot wild edibles such as blackberries, pineapple weed, wild “cardoons”, daylily blossoms and many more untamed culinary delights. You’ll learn how to sustainably harvest and then deliciously prepare these wild, seasonal ingredients. Leda will show you how to find free food that’s safe to eat and growing all around you. She’ll explain techniques for collecting wild plants ways that are beneficial to the ecosystems you are harvesting from. She’ll also introduce you to the medicinal uses of many wild plants. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring drinking water and a way to take notes and photos. Leda will then explain the flavors of wild ingredients and how to prepare them, as well as tips on how to preserve them for year-round use.
Leda Meredith is a lifelong forager (it’s her great-grandmother’s fault). She is the author of several books, including "Norhtheast Foraging: 120 Wild and Flavorful Edibles from Beach Plums to Wineberries' and "The Forager's Feast: How to Identify, Gather, and Prepare Wild Edibles." Leda holds a certificate in Ethnobotany and is an instructor at the New York Botanical Garden and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. She leads foraging and sustainable food system walks internationally.
