About Your Host

We're a community of artists and makers dedicated to the telling of stories both true and fictional. We offer premier classes in creative writing in the SF Bay Area. All of our instructors are published writers, have extensive college and university teaching and/or publishing industry experience. We are skilled enough to work with pros but welcome beginners in all of our classes. Take our classes for fun or to write your life's work.

What we'll do

Instructor: Sarah Tuft Behind every winning touchdown, every gold medal and every record-breaking score is a lifetime of rigorous exercise and an unyielding commitment to train. Great writing is earned the same way. When we build the muscles of our craft, strengthen our understanding of story, and show up at the page, dramatic storytelling becomes second nature. So when procrastination, inertia, and lack of inspiration get the better of you, it’s time to drag yourself to the gym. Dramatists’ Workout is designed to whip your writing habit into shape. A “boot camp” for those who wish to tell stories on stage, TV or film, Dramatists’ Workout is perfect for prose writers who want to adapt their voice to drama, as well as for seasoned dramatists looking to refresh their skills and reinvigorate their work. The workshop builds on a series of “workouts,” from improv to writing assignments based on prompts, to reveal the fundamentals of a strong scene: character, objective, conflict, subtext. Because it’s “just an exercise,” which remove the pressure of performance, writers can strike gold with an exciting new short film or play or even one that grows into a longer piece after the workshop is over. An added cardio benefit–Dramatists’ Workshop is good for the heart! THIS IS A TWO-DAY WORKSHOP: About the Instructor: Sarah Tuft’s plays have been developed at Ensemble Studio Theatre, Naked Angels’ Tuesdays at 9, 24 Hour Plays at BAM and produced at Monster Box Theatre (Detroit). Sarah’s play, 110 Stories, is published by Playscripts and has been produced internationally. The play grew out of benefit productions at Geffen Playhouse, Public Theater, Skirball Center and Vineyard Theatre with actors including Billy Crudup, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Edie Falco, James Gandolfini, Neil Patrick Harris, John Hawkes, Samuel L. Jackson, Melissa Leo, Aasif Mandvi, Susan Sarandon and Kathleen Turner. Sarah received a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. Sarah Tuft’s most recent one-act play, Marvel-ous Monica, will premiere in Los Angeles this fall.
