About Your Host

Yolanda is a mother/wife, entrepreneur and urban farmer. An avid do-it-herselfer, she is at home at her own Oakland homestead where she and her family keep chickens, bees, and learn about permaculture principles on their large urban lot, growing much of their own food. Yolanda is co-founder of Pollinate Farm & Garden, an urban farm store and homesteading emporium located in the heart of Oakland. Pollinate carries edible nursery stock (seeds, starts, fruit trees, and perennial edibles), tools and equipment for seed-to-table organic farming and gardening. Pollinate is also a purveyor of supplies for food preserving, fermentation and cheese making, small scale livestock raising and beekeeping , including baby chicks, ducks, turkeys and bees. And probiotic drinks are a tasty way to enjoy the health benefits that fermentation provides. Learn to make them at home! It's easy, economical, and fun. Pollinate Farm & Garden is excited to welcome back our good friend and fermentation expert Alex Lewin, author (with Raquel Guajardo) of Kombucha, Kefir, and Beyond. Alex's latest book is a fun and flavorful guide to fermenting your own probiotic beverages at home. In this talk and hands-on workshop Alex will demystify the fermentation process. You'll taste some of Alex's favorite fermented beverages and then make your own creation to complete the fermentation process at home. Then you'll have the floor! Alex will field your your burning (or bubbling!) questions about fermentation, flavorings, tools and techniques. Copies of his book will be available, and he'll sign it, too! Admission includes materials fee. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Alex Lewin is the author of Real Food Fermentation and Kombucha, Kefir and Beyond. He is software engineer and architect, fermenter, health coach, real food activist, trained chef, raw milk drinker, musician, bicyclist, and motorcycle and scooter rider. He writes the blog, "Feed Me Like You Mean It". He thinks that Ball jars are the ultimate glassware. His heroes include Sandor Katz, Sally Fallon, Vandana Shiva, Kurt Vonnegut, Anthony Bourdain, and Alan Turing. A graduate of Harvard, the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, and the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Alex seeks to create a healthier and tastier world by spreading the word about fermentation and real food. He is at home in Boston and in the Bay Area.
