West Mountain Harriman (Moderate/Strenuous)
West Mountain is a loop hike totaling 4.55 miles. First, we travel south from the parking area and connect to the famous Appalachian Trail where we will begin our ascent of West Mountain. At the top, we walk the ridge line on the AT for over 1 mile with fantastic scenic lookouts on both sides. We'll stop for lunch at the West Mountain lean-to (a 3-sided stone shelter used by thru-hikers for sleeping). The lean-to offers great views of the Hudson River and even Manhattan on a clear day. After lunch, we'll begin heading north to ascend a second nameless peak, then begin a steep descent. There is a short rock scramble on the descent which requires the use of hands. Finally, we'll cross the Doodlekill Creek and it's smooth sailing back to the parking area. This hike is considered moderate to strenuous. *We'll be meeting at MacDonald 's which is located North of 29 Hugh Grant Circle Zarios. Just follow the Elevated line Half a Block on the Uptown side. The Address is 1982 Westchester Ave. Bronx NY. Meeting Time 8:45 am Leave Time is 9:00 am
