Summary
We are very pleased to that artist-blacksmith, acrobat and mad scientist Atticus Keesling will be back at Adam's Forge from his home state of Michigan to teach a 2-day workshop on forging whimsical creatures. In this workshop students will learn to create fantastical animals with very detailed faces from large scale stock. Atticus forges the details of his animals using the unique technique of air hammering. Have you seen his work and curious how he does it?! We were too! Now that we've seen his technique we can tell you that it absolutely mind blowing and will change the way you think about using tools. First, Atticus will be demonstrating how to use an air hammer and associated tooling and then let students loose to try it out on their own to create their own creatures. Using an air hammer dramatically speeds up the process and enables the smith to incorporate a level of detail that would otherwise be challenging to achieve. In order to achieve a high level of detail, Atticus will show students how to rough out material needed for each shape, how to approach establishing planes and isolation of material. For larger shapes, he will lead students in team striking for each other. Atticus will be teaching students how to effectively use tooling such as fullers, chisels and punches to create the specific features on each creature. While students will be using air hammers to work with larger stock in the workshop, each of these techniques can be effectively applied to other projects using hand held tools and a (regular) hammer. This is a unique opportunity to learn from a master and to learn techniques that you literally can't learn anywhere else. You definitely don't want to miss this class! Learn more about Atticus and check out some of his fantastic and fantastical work on his website here: https://www.amkironworks.org/ The pre-requisite for this class is any Discovery class. This class is most appropriate for the advanced beginner/ intermediate smith that is comfortable working with hand held tools and working with heavier stock. This class is a two day class will run from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm with a one hour break for lunch. Students need to attend both Saturday and Sunday.
