This walking tour is about 2 hours long and each participant will receive an itinerary with 14 stops that includes 7 New York City landmarks and 3 national landmarks. All stops are fully discussed. The tour focuses on the architecture and history of a part of a neighborhood that was known as Millionaires Mile at the turn of the twentieth century (between 1890 & 1910), and is now part of today's Upper East Side Historic District. We will walk through Grand Army Plaza, up 5th Ave. and explore the side streets between Madison and 5th Ave. ending our excursion at E. 64th Street. and Madison Ave. We will see surviving Gilded Age mansions that even though they have been converted to other uses they retain their historic styles of architecture. We will see a robust Beaux Arts mansion from 1890 - a French neo-Classic style mansion - a Roman Renaissance mansion - a Venetian Renaissance style mansion - a nice example of a French neo-Classic Beaux Arts style. There is a hotel designed after a French Renaissance chaaeau and another hotel described as a French Gothic tower. Then there is a building designed as a mock medieval castle. And included are three historically styled clubhouses. from the Gilded Age. Also as we pass various sites I will show pictures of some of the grand / historic mansions that have been destroyed.
