About Your Host

Alfred Pommer is an author, a college graduate and a native of New York City. He worked for the New York City Parks Department for 25 years (15 years as a supervisor). Fascinated by the city’s history and architecture, he decided to share his passion with others and started to organize walking tours in the early 1990s. As a true passionate of New York City, Alfred collects photographs and anecdotes of the spots he enjoys the most. He is the author of four Manhattan guide books “Exploring the Original West Village”, “Exploring New York's SoHo”, "Exploring Manhattan's Murray Hill" and "Exploring Gramercy Park and Union Square". What we'll do

A walking tour hosted by Alfred Pommer exploring Rockefeller Center with interesting pictures and stories about the conflicts between the artists and the Rockefeller family concerning Fascism, Communism, male nudity and more and I will discuss the different meanings represented by dozens of the beautiful Art Deco statues, murals and reliefs on public display. You will also find out about: John D. Rockefeller and his nemesis - Who was she? Why was she so vindictive? Rockefeller Center's site - What was here before? Who owns Rockefeller Center? Diego Rivera's mural in the lobby of Rockefeller's RCA Bldg. - What happened to it? And why? Who was the ostentatious holdout who outsmarted and outlasted the Rockefellers and Columbia University for 19 years, even though his lease had long expired. The story behind the center and what was on its site before it was created. Also about the center's bankruptcy and who owns it now. All this while we examine dozens of murals, sculptures and mosaics by world renowned artists.
