“It gives me a sense of accomplishment when I see that I can cause some good changes in people’s lives, even if they’re very small.”
While watching her father build small worlds with mini plants, waterfalls, and even lighting, Sunny started building up her interest in plant when she was a kid. After growing up, Sunny never gave up her passion and even started her own flower shop to teach people terrarium making and flower arranging. “Our store is located in a fast changing area. Most people living here are of a younger generation. People usually are too busy or don’t have a lot experience with plants.” Sunny says. “Hopefully, our classes can introduce more green in people’s lives and also be a place people can meet more people, and make more new friends.”
Are you too busy to stop and enjoy the nature & city around you? Today, take a deep breath and learn more about Sunny’s journey of nurturing her childhood love of plants to start her own business, her favorite moments from her classes, and what she has to say about the lovely city of Boston.
- Hi Sunny, can you introduce yourself and tell us about the classes that you offer through Verlocal?
My name is Sunny. I am the owner of Sunny Florists in Boston. We offer terrarium classes and flower arrangement classes through Verlocal. Both classes have no experience requirements.
- We know that many guests love your classes! When did you first become interested/passionate in plants?
My dad owned a nursery when I was a kid. So I started to learn about plants then. My dad is also a big fan of bonsai. It was always a lot of fun to watch him build some mini landscapes in a bonsai tray. He built little worlds with mini mountains, ponds, rivers, waterfalls, water fountains and even lighting. My interest started from observing my dad’s work.
- Where does your inspiration come from? What is the story that made you want to pursue your passion and become a host?
My inspiration comes from my dad and my training during college. I studied both landscape architecture and architecture and went to graduate school for landscape architecture. I was trained in how to comprehend a space, and how to shape and sustainably grow a landscape in the space. These elements are included in our terrarium workshop. We encourage people to create some unique things, match the spaces with their own tastes. And we tell people how to take care of their work, and some solutions for the potential problems that may arise. It gives me a sense of accomplishment when I see that I can cause some good changes in people’s lives, even if they’re very small.
- How would you describe the link between your classes and the community around you?
Hopefully, our classes can introduce more green in people’s lives and also be a place people can meet more people, and make more new friends. Our store is located in a fast changing area. Most people living here are of a younger generation. People usually are too busy or don’t have a lot experience with plants. We are trying to create more and more unique designs and low maintenance plant arrangements through the classes.
- How long have you been living in the city? What would you recommend to someone who just moved to this city?
I have been in this city for four years. Boston is one of my favorite cities. The city is changing everyday, especially in the part we are living in. My favorite things to do are walking along the freedom trail and going to museums. Also, I think it’s important to meet and talk to people. Boston has the most talented people. You never know who will inspire you.
- Tell us about your favorite moment/ biggest achievement since you started teaching your classes.
When I see I helped bring about some good changes in a customer’s life, that is my favorite moment. Some customers come back to the store and tell me, “Sunny, you helped me feel that plants are so easy to care for. I love plants now more than ever.” That’s my favorite moment.
- What is your most favorite plant & story behind it?
I love air plants a lot. They don’t need soil, which gives you a lot of flexibility in an arrangement.
- Any recommendations to someone who wants to pursue their passion for a career?
Your passion is the key to making your career successful.
- What does Verlocal mean to you?
Verlocal introduces me to lots of fun things, gives me a chance to try something I’ve wanted to do but never had the chance to before. Also, Verlocal is like a bridge, connecting people and organizing communities based on interests.
